🌟 Why Lincoln Park?
Lincoln Park is one of Chicago’s most historic and beloved lakefront destinations. Originally established as a cemetery, it gradually became a sprawling public landscape filled with gardens, museums, historic buildings, lagoons, monuments, and recreational spaces.

At the heart of the park is Lincoln Park Zoo, which began in 1868 with a gift of two swans to the Lincoln Park Commissioners. From that humble beginning, it grew into one of the country’s oldest zoological institutions and one of the few remaining free zoos in the United States. 🦢🦁

During the walk, we’ll explore that evolution—from early animal displays to modern habitats—while uncovering the architecture, landscapes, memorials, and hidden stories that make Lincoln Park so special.

There’s a LOT more here than animals and pretty scenery. Come discover the stories behind it all! 🏙️🌳

📜 WHY PORTAGE PARK?
Named for the ancient portage route connecting the Des Plaines and Chicago Rivers, Portage Park has long been a crossroads of transportation, cultures, and community.

Annexed to Chicago in 1889, the neighborhood expanded rapidly in the early 20th century as streetcar lines made the Northwest Side increasingly accessible to working- and middle-class families.

Today, Portage Park is known for its beautifully preserved brick bungalows, historic theatres, commercial corridors, parks, and strong neighborhood identity. 🏡🌳

The neighborhood is also home to several iconic landmarks, including the Portage Park Pool, which hosted the 1959 Pan-American Games and the 1972 U.S. Olympic Swim Trials, as well as the Portage Theater, Patio Theater, Six Corners, and Merrimac Park.

***

🏡 THE BUNGALOW BELT
One of Portage Park’s greatest treasures is its collection of classic Chicago bungalows.

We’ll look at the details that make them distinctive — brick construction, low-pitched roofs, broad front windows, porches, and the many individual touches homeowners used to personalize these homes.

🏘️ Block after block, the houses tell the story of Chicago’s growing middle class and the families who transformed the Northwest Side into a thriving community.

***

🎭 THEATRES, ENTERTAINMENT & SIX CORNERS
Six Corners was once one of the Northwest Side’s busiest commercial and entertainment districts.

We’ll explore historic theatres, department stores, banks, restaurants, and storefronts while learning how shopping and entertainment made Six Corners a destination for generations of Chicagoans.

From grand movie palaces to neighborhood businesses, the buildings reveal how dramatically this part of Chicago has evolved. 🎬🏬✨
