DECANTING: DOES IT IMPROVE THE WINE?

Details

Oenophiles claim that decanting a wine greatly enhances it's qualities. The theory is that pouring it from it's bottle into another container aerates the wine and the resulting oxidation allows the wine's flavor and aroma to open up. But does it actually make a noticeable difference?
In our August session we will put this theory to a test. Each participant is invited to choose a wine that they think will benefit from decanting. (Younger red wines with higher tannin levels are reputed to benefit most from decanting.) In addition, each participant is invited to bring a decanter, carafe or some other vessel to pour half their bottle of wine into. We will then do taste comparisons, decanted vs. straight from the bottle.
Our process will be the same as usual: Everyone will take a turn presenting their selection and providing some background information about it. (Some research may be required.)
We will all then share, taste and critique each bottle each way.
I will provide some tasting glasses but if you have some of your own, bring them along.
If you want to bring some other food items to accompany your presentation, that would be welcome also.
I have reserved a large outdoor table for us on the recreation deck of my condo building in Kakaako. (Access details will be sent on the day before the event to those who RSVP.
Because of space restrictions, we can only accommodate about a dozen people for this event.
If you’re certain you will attend, please sign up soon so we can get a count of how many people to expect.
Hope to see you there,
Bob
