Alcohol occurs in wine through the process of fermentation, in which yeasts are added to the crushed grapes (the "must") and these yeasts consume the natural sugars in the grape juice, converting them into ethanol. Winemakers control this process by using many different processes to produce a specific ABV (Alcohol By Volume) which is then required to be listed on the label of almost all wines.
Wines vary greatly in terms of alcohol content, with some having twice as much, or more, than others. The alcohol level in a wine can enhance the other features of the wine or mask them. Identifying alcohol content is, therefore, important in judging the quality of a wine and the effects of drinking it.
In our December session, we will test our ability to judge alcohol content in various wines, using a blind tasting format. Participants are requested to select and bring an interesting bottle of wine, make note of the ABV and then cover up the bottle. Each participant in turn will then pour a taste for everyone, and we will all attempt to guess the alcohol content of the wine without knowing what kind of wine it is.
I will provide some tasting glasses but if you have some of your own, bring them along.
If you want to bring some food items to accompany your presentation, that would be welcome also.
I have reserved a large outdoor table for us on the recreation deck of our condo building in Kakaako. (Access details will be sent on the day before the event to those who RSVP.)
Because of space restrictions, we can only accommodate about a dozen people for this event.
If you’re certain you will attend, please sign up soon so we can get a count of how many people to expect.
Hope to see you there,
Bob
