Leveraging Large Language Models in Insurance: A Wawanesa Case Study
Wawanesa has a long history dating back to 1896, originating in the town of Wawanesa, Manitoba. We take pride in building on our history while being leaders in the modern insurance industry and provide ever increasing numbers of policyholders with excellent products and services.
As part of that vision, The Advanced Analytics team has been exploring the use of Large Language Models (LLMs) for several use cases within Wawanesa. One example includes the use of LLMs is for underwriting rules, which are used by Wawanesa to tailor coverage for our members.
This presentation will outline the steps the Advanced Analytics team took to deliver a successful analysis, including:
- Parsing source data from semi-structured PDFs using Python and AWS (Amazon Web Services)
- Data transformation into a ML-usable format
- Rules comparison and analysis with BERT, an open-source LLM
- The importance of validation by domain experts
- Why LLMs are a useful new tool in delivering successful analytical projects

• Christian Atupan, Senior Data Engineer, Wawanesa Insurance
Christian is a Senior Data Engineer of Advanced Analytics at the Wawanesa Mutual Insurance Company. He is passionate about almost anything relating to data and is a fan of "serverless" tools. Aside from being a Father to a 3 year-old kid, he is starting to explore into a few hobbies like photography and biking.
• Sylvie Ong, Senior Machine Learning Engineer, Wawanesa Insurance
Sylvie holds a Ph.D in Electrical & Computer Engineering from National University of Singapore, and has R&D experience tackling a wide-variety of problems: question-answering, automated dialogue, machine translation, optical character recognition, visual defect detection, synthetic image generation, fraud detection, forecasting time series data, reinforcement learning, and planning algorithms. Her current interest is in fair and accountable AI and text analytics. When she's not working, she's most often found at the skate park (summer) or the outdoor rinks (winter).
• Marc Boulet, Manager, Advanced Analytics, Wawanesa Insurance
Marc is a Manager of Advanced Analytics at the Wawanesa Mutual Insurance Company. He holds an MSc. in Analytics at the Georgia Institute of Technology and a B.Sc. in Geophysics from the University of Calgary. He is also an active member in the local Calgary data science community as a co-founder of Untapped Energy, a not-for-profit, grassroots-led organization seeking to collectively solve problems and generate innovation for the Canadian energy industry using data science and analytics. In his spare time, Marc likes to pursue analog activities such as travel, sports and reading.
