Winnipeg R User Group Meeting #11 - Connecting RStudio with GitHub

GitHub is a version control system that can be seamlessly integrated into the Data Science workflow to support reproducible science.

Data scientists, researchers and statisticians have been using GitHub more and more as data analytics teams grow in size with multiple analysts collaborating on larger projects.

As Jenny Bryan has stated:

“Data analysis, statistical research, and teaching statistics have at least one thing in common: these activities all produce many files ! .....
….. Most of these files evolve over the course of a project and often need to be shared with others, for reading or edits, as a project unfolds.
Without explicit and structured file management, project organization can easily descend into chaos, taking time away from the primary work and reducing the quality of the final product.
This unhappy result can be avoided by re-purposing tools and workflows from the software development world, namely, distributed version control.”

GitHub nicely compliments RStudio Projects by creating an online repository for your local folders.

In this meeting, Marcello Nesca will lead a workshop to achieve the following:

  • Making a GitHub profile
  • Connecting RStudio with GitHub
  • Creating repositories
  • Set up a R project with multiple users
  • Following people

Please bring a laptop computer if you wish to do the hands-on exercises at this meeting.
