How do we create revolution while maintaining love and selfhood? Much of June Jordan's work exists in the idea that love is revolutionary, and will be truly accessed within revolution itself, that revolution requires love and is also the door for it. June Jordan's approach to poetry aligns very closely with Winterfat Presse's foundation:

"Poetry is a political action undertaken for the sake of information, the faith, the exorcism, and the lyrical invention, that telling the truth makes possible. Poetry means taking control of the language of your life. ... and build[ing] a revolution in which speaking and listening to somebody becomes the first and last purpose to every social encounter."
— June Jordan

This iteration of Winterfat Reading Room will attempt to re-embody June Jordan's thematics and energy through performances from writers who have written in response to prompts crafted upon studying June Jordan's work. This event features a line up of poetry readings and music by artist Sarah Applewhite. Everyone has composed something unique for the event, in response to the prompts below.
Art, pins, and publications from our magazine and art editors will be available for donation-based purchase at the event.

--- All of those interested in participating in the open mic are encouraged to select work (or write something) related to the following prompts:

  1. Write a poem about something that feels inherently terrifying, and transform it.
  2. Make use of short, repeated phrases (ex. I must / I must; I will / I will; I become / I become) to write a poem enacting and exacting yourself.
  3. How has loving liberated you? Write a poem describing how it feels to be freed—brought into your body—through the practice of love.

We are looking forward to reading and seeing you! If you would like to sign up for the open mic prior to the evening of the event, please email winterfatpresse@gmail.com.

THERE IS NO ATTENDEE LIMIT. PLEASE JUST SHOW UP! NO NEED TO RSVP.
