August 2017 - Coding Dojo - Code Kata Meet-up

Details

Presentation:

This will be an interactive meet-up where you will form teams of two and work together on a code kata (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Pair_programming) (1) pattern to solve a simple problem using the Pair Programming (2) Ping Pong Pattern. (http://wiki.c2.com/?PairProgrammingPingPongPattern)

  1. A code kata (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Pair_programming) is an exercise in programming which helps a programmer hone their skills through practice and repetition. The term was probably first coined by Dave Thomas, co-author of the book The Pragmatic Programmer, in a bow to the Japanese concept of kata in the martial arts.

  2. Pair programming i (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Pair_programming)s an agile software development technique in which two programmers work together at one workstation. One, the driver, writes code while the other, the observer or navigator,[1] reviews each line of code as it is typed in. The two programmers switch roles frequently. While reviewing, the observer also considers the "strategic" direction of the work, coming up with ideas for improvements and likely future problems to address. This frees the driver to focus all of his or her attention on the "tactical" aspects of completing the current task, using the observer as a safety net and guide.

We will be using http://cyber-dojo.org to have fun collaborating and practice programing together and I encourage programming with someone you have never coded with before.

At the end of the meetup there will be an optional opportunity for show and tell.

Observers are welcome, and you do not need to participate to attend.

Choose your own programming language to practice in:

C#,Clojure,Elixir,Elm,Erlang,F#,Go,Groovy,Haskell,Java,Javascript,PHP,Perl,Python,R,Ruby,Rust,Scala,Swift,VisualBasic, and more!

This will be an interactive session, so please bring your own laptop.
