Bro. István Horváth was born and raised in the legendary land of Transylvania, therefore he doesn’t like Bram Stoker. He was educated in his hometown – Kolozsvár [koloj-va:R] – in centuries-old schools. He studied literature and linguistics, both in Hungarian and Russian. Growing up in Romania, he is also fluent in Romanian.

He was many things after graduating: teacher, translator, theatre critic, brush maker, freelance journalist, and quiet rebel. Left his homeland and moved one border West, becoming a journalist in Budapest, and when the censorship of ideology was replaced with the censorship of financial powers, he left that career and stopped writing. But he left behind hundreds of articles, reports, interviews, columns published under his name, contributions in books, a translation of a Nabokov novel, and many writings.

After a temporary stint in sales, Istvan happily found himself as a humanitarian worker in war-torn places like Bosnia & Hercegovina, and Chechnya. He still cherishes the memories of those years…
In Budapest, he was made a Mason in 1994, after Freemasonry was again legal in Eastern Europe, in a lodge named Equality, so he arrived in Canada as a Master Mason. Work abroad and the circumstances prevented him from being more active in his mother lodge, so he completed his journey in Canada. After affiliating with a local lodge (Electric 495), he became a member of Royal Arch, Scottish Rite Valley of Hamilton (where we are now), and Royal and Select Masters.
 
More in line with his interests, he is a member of the Philalethes Society (the oldest Masonic research body in North America), also of the Scottish Rite Research Society (DC), and the Quatuor Coronati Correspondent Circle (QC from UK is the premier research lodge of the world). He has a Masonic blog where he publishes his writings in this field.
