Kick off this new hiking series celebrating women historical figures in nature at Bright Leaf Preserve!

On this series of hikes, we will learn about Austin women who are memorialized in nature--some prominent and some whom history has obscured. This is an embodied experience of being women together in nature while learning about the legacies of women from the past.

“Meet” Georgia Lucas, the 1930s-era business woman and benefactor who amassed 216 acres of Austin wilderness that was intentionally left for the enjoyment of the people and is now known as Bright Leaf Preserve. Today the land is maintained as private property within the 32,000 acres of the Balcones Canyonlands Preserve and may only be toured with a qualified guide, per Georgia’s will. Join us on this moderate 2.5 mile hike with steep steps going up and down hill, a potentially slippery creek crossing and uneven footing through juniper oak woodlands. Meet at the trailhead at 4111 Old Bull Creek Rd. Austin TX 78731.
Can't find the group? Day-of questions can be answered via text to 214-641-8559.

I will have an historical introduction to the Preserve’s founder, Georgia Lucas, that orients our WeWIN group around the theme of local women figures in nature, but please note that the hike is officially guided by Austin Water Wildlands and is open to the public.

Signup is required via Austin Water Wildlands and is limited to 25 people. Only a sign up with Austin Water Wildlands will reserve a space for you to hike with the group into the Preserve.
