Too often people approach professional and skill development as an intermittent activity. Outlining a strategic goal-based approach, this presentation discusses methods to inventory what skills are needed to arrive and thrive in a future position; provides tools to determine any gap between current ability and future needs; and outlines the steps necessary to create an action plan addressing any skills that need enhancement or acquisition to achieve the desired goal.

Information is shared about the three critical categories of skills for career success, and that all three (Professional, Interpersonal, and Business Acumen) must be cultivated at each level of career development. The presentation concludes with a review of self-advocacy techniques important to communicate one’s current endeavors, recent accomplishments and future career objectives.

Speaker’s Bio:
Deborah Sgro is a certified career coach with a private practice, Beyond The Glass Ceiling, LLC. She specializes in coaching technology and business professionals at all levels to create and execute strategies for skill development and career advancement.
As a former senior technologist professional in the financial industry, Deborah worked on Wall Street for over 40 years developing technical solutions for BNY Mellon, NY Stock Exchange, and American Stock Exchange. She is certified as both a Project Manager and an Agile Professional from the Project Management
Institute (PMI). Deborah also holds two masters’ degrees from Stevens Institute of Technology - one in Computer Science, and the other in Technology Management.
She is on the Board of Advisors for Women in Big Data, and is the Global Mentoring Director for that organization. Deborah addresses corporate clients on all aspects of career advancement and skill development, and presented at the 2023 National Career Development Association conference on Future-Proofing One’s Career In A World Of Emerging AI.
