Substrate - Advantages and Opportunities (Marianne Goldin)

Details
Welcome to our first "post-pandemic" meetup! We're excited to re-start our in-person meetups with Marianne Goldin, who will speak on her work with Substrate. Light snacks and beverages are provided.
*Please review the Covid and in-person restrictions below.*
Parity Technologies’ Substrate is an Open Source framework that provides components to build a decentralized ledger (e.g., blockchain).
Substrate is best known as the architecture that powers the Polkadot network (and the DOT token), and was developed by a team including a co-founder of Ethereum. However, applications for Substrate extend beyond cryptocurrency: Substrate is a dynamic ecosystem that is being used by engineers and entrepreneurs to build smart contracts, parachain infrastructure, and other solutions leveraging blockchain/decentralized ledger technology. The Substrate framework’s components facilitate a quicker implementation of a blockchain: Substrate provides a database layer, networking layer, consensus engine, transaction queue, benchmarking tooling and a forkless upgrade functionality. Furthermore, it is written entirely in Rust, providing high execution speed, correctness, and memory safety.
This talk will introduce the Substrate project, situate it in the programmable blockchain space, outline its advantages, and provide an overview of opportunities to go further in learning/developing in this framework. No coding background is necessary.
Speaker: Marianne Goldin (she/her)
Marianne is a Software Engineer at Transparent Financial Systems, where she works on distributed ledger solutions in the Rust language. She is interested in decentralized systems, decentralized identity, and applied cryptography. In her spare time, she is an appreciator of underground French electronic music and has a fondness for the outdoors.
