Hands-On Workshop Title: Introduction to Linux Fundamentals
Workshop Fee: $30.00 (members), $35.00 (non-members)

Topic Details:

In this workshop, it is assumed that the student has some working knowledge of computers and networks.

The instructor will provide a foundational understanding of computers, networks and protocols via some brief primers which include: computer and networking history; a brief explanation of the Open Systems Interconnect (OSI) model; and an introduction to the TCP/IP protocol (used for Internet connectivity).

These primers are designed to demystify some pre-conceptions of how computers and the internet works, give the student a good foundation for learning the Linux operating and to perform the activities in the workshop based upon the topics covered on the brief primers.

Objectives:

  1. Basic understanding of what a computer is and how it works at its core
  2. Basic understanding of what a network is and how it works.
  3. Basic understanding of what a protocol is what it does
  4. Basic understanding of the TCP/IP protocol is and how it is used
  5. Basic understanding of what the Open Systems Interconnect (OSI) model is and how computers, networks, protocols and applications you use relate to the OSI model and work with each other.
  6. To apply your understanding of the Linux Operating System during the workshop.

Prerequisites:

A system with Windows 10 Operating System (64-bit) or newer
4 CPU Cores (More are preferred)
12GB of Memory. 16GB or higher are preferred
50GB of free disk space to install VM Player and run the linux training virtual machine
A Native GPU that supports DirectX 11.0

Internet Connectivity for some of the lessons

The following will need to be downloaded into the computer the user will using for the attend the class ahead of time:

VMWare Player Downloaded and Installed (Free Download from: https://customerconnect.vmware.com/downloads/info/slug/desktop_end_user_computing/vmware_workstation_player/16_0)

VMWare Virtual Machine Linux Image for this class downloaded to the computer
(Download from: TBD - provided prior ta week or so before the workshop)
