[Workshop] Snort IDS + 2014 Plans & Member Lunch Meeting

[Workshop] Snort IDS + 2014 Plans & Member Lunch Meeting

Details

Snort Intrusion Detection System

Join us for the Women's Society of Cyberjutsu (WSC) Cybersecurity Workshop hosted from our Washington, DC location. This is a hands-on, practical workshop where you will put into practice those things you may have read or covered in a class. This is also a great way to keep your skills fresh if you're a veteran.

Every workshop addresses beginner and advanced topic material. Beginners are encouraged to watch and learn as much as possible even though you may not have a clue. Exposure to new tools and techniques by watching will advance your learning process a lot quicker than trying to learn on your own. You will get to ask questions and see how it's done in the real world. Advanced attendees are encouraged to share and help answer "noob" questions as much as possible so everyone can learn from them.

Agenda:

Lunch

If you plan to attend the member lunch meeting prior to the workshop, you'll have an opportunity to hear the plans for the 2014, contribute to discussions, and give valuable input to the future of WSC. Some items of discussion include:

• Nonprofit status

• Membership Structure

• Workshops & Classes

• Committee Opportunities

• Cyberjutsu Girls Academy

Lunch will run 1130am to 100pm.

Workshop

For this awesome workshop, analysts from Sourcefire's Vulnerability Research Team (VRT) will show you how to find malicious data on your network, analyze it, and write detection for it using the well known open source IDS, Snort. They will teach you how to write Snort rules like an analyst would learn as well as give you all the tools needed to write detection. Then, using theoretical examples and real world traffic, we will show you how to analyze and find malicious content on your network. You will then write your own rules to detect content and replay traffic across a live instance of snort to test your rules.

The workshop will run 100pm to 600pm
