Lunch & Learn: The Harness Wore a Trenchcoat - Building a Rust MCP Server

This talk is from Michelle Rojas, one of the head organizers of Rust NYC, and it addresses the unglamorous problem at the center of every AI agent: how do you give a language model safe access to a real filesystem without also handing it the ability to burn the house down? Michelle will build falcon-mcp live, a sandboxed Rust MCP server exposing tools across five categories (filesystem, cargo, git, prompt-safety linting, and exec) to any MCP-compatible client, including Gemini CLI. The goal is to make every tool call a boring, predictable event instead of an open door.

Attendees will leave with a concrete blueprint for sandbox boundaries (root jail, binary allowlist, read-only mode, per-tool timeouts), an understanding of why a single Rust binary with dual stdio and HTTP transports is the right shape for both local agent harnesses and hosted deployments, and guidance on treating the tool surface exposed to a model as a security boundary, not just an API.
