Climate Tech Talk Night

Details

We are SO excited to announce our Climate Tech Talk Night on Tuesday, 5th December. Our wonderful hosts, Choco, are welcoming the Women Who Code community and anyone interested in how technology can impact the planet in a positive way.

✍️ EVENT DESCRIPTION

We will have three talks from three fantastic women who are actively working in Climate Tech:

Green Coding Principles by Doreen Sacker
Green coding is a relatively new term and refers to programming code in a way that minimises the energy consumption of software, and therefore attempts to limit the potential environmental impact. One google search produces 0.07g of CO2. Visiting google.de for one year 10000 times a month (328 times a day) produces as much CO2 as boiling water for 642 cups of tea. But where does the tech industry spend its energy? These days data centers are responsible for a big and steady chunk of energy consumption. Most developers don’t have an influence on how much energy data centers need. However, we do have an influence on the code we write and where we run it. All of us can impact how much energy our code consumes and by green coding, we can reduce emissions steadily together 💚

The ecological cost of generative AI by Veronica Machado
In 2023, Generative AI seems to be everywhere: we are bringing this new technology to every possible industry, science and art. However, we must address the environmental impact of running these models without any control or oversight. In this talk, we will explore the relationship between Generative AI and our planet. We'll also discuss how we can leverage this new technology to be a positive force for change, and how it can be used to help humanity pave the way for a more sustainable future.

Exploring the positive impact that we as programmers can have on the planet by Jessica Greene
Curious to see how you might apply your digital skills against the global climate crisis? Wondered how it is to work for a company with this mission? In this talk I will disclose how it is to work in a purpose led company, the impact Ecosia is having as well as other interesting projects I have come across which demonstrate the breadth of skills required to ensure a better planet for future generations and the role we can all play in it.
