We're feeling inspired after another wonderful EYEO Festival (http://eyeofestival.com/), so this month's HackNight will feature some creative coding with music!

Mike Hodnick is a local developer who'll be talking to us about one of his passions: live-coded performance art. We'll have a variety of activities available for learning about different ways we can experiment with music and code.

Live-Coded Performance Art: Hacking for Audiences

Live-coded performance is about hacking for an audience, coding without specifications, and ephemeral software that becomes obsolete as soon as the laptop is closed. Live-coders use text as their interface into algorithmic dance music, scattered audio experiments, and glitchy visuals. The code and algorithms not only produce unique results, but can allow the artist to re-write and change their environment on the spot if desired. Live-coders typically choose to project their screen during performances, allowing the audience a glimpse into their process.

In this session we'll review a brief history of live-coded performance art, watch some video examples of performances, discuss both audio and visual live-coding, talk about the state of live-coded performance in the USA and the rest of the world, and walk through a few demos of different live-coding languages and environments that can be used for artistic performance.

Additional Notes

Women Who Code events are inclusive to all people who identify as women -- we welcome trans and non-binary members.

Out of consideration for our location sponsors, please try not to arrive prior to 6pm. They kindly host us after their normal business hours, and it is tough to handle early arrivals.

To ensure a safe and comfortable space for our members to network and collaborate, we ask recruiters to refrain from attending our event. If you would like to support our group, please contact the organizers to discuss the best ways to get involved. Thank you!
