It's time for a mystery AND a mystery set in the Bay Area!

This month, we're reading The Golden Gate by Amy Chua. Set in the 1940s, this page-turner follows homicide detective Al Sullivan as he investigates a president's assassination and the death of a child from a very prominent San Francisco family, both of which took place at the same hotel in Berkeley. The book covers themes of race, class, sex, and personal history, while of course, like any other murder mystery, keeping you guessing about whodunnit!

If you're thinking, Where have I heard the name Amy Chua before? you might be surprised by the answer: Chua is the OG Tiger Mom! In 2011, the Yale Law professor released her very controversial memoir Battle Hymn of the Tiger Mother where she outlined her extremely tough Asian parenting style (and how her two daughters reacted very differently to it). The Golden Gate is her debut novel. Will she meet OUR expectations?

Looking forward to our discussion in March!
