E-Bike Ride 9/4 VAIL PASS - UP*OVER*DOWN*&BACK LUNCH@COPPER MT.
Details
Hello Bikers,
E-bike Ride (or very very strong Traditional Bikers)
Advanced Ride. About 30 Miles Total, Speed will vary with terrain. Probably about 3 hours or so of riding time. Sometimes very steep. We will probably enter back into the Denver area after our bike ride at around 3:00 pm or maybe even later (figuring ride, lunch, and the drive back - Hard to know though.)
This will be a fun, beautiful, advanced ride. We will meet at the Union Parking Lot in Copper mountain at 7:45 am. So you probably have to leave Denver if you live on the West side by 6:00 am, and earlier if you live further. So check your mapping and see how long it will take you to get there by 7:45am. We will roll out from the Union Parking lot at 8:00 am, ride to the top of Vail Pass, stop at the new Visitor Center for a restroom break, if needed, then ride down the other side of the pass toward Vail. We will end at the Gore Creek Campground. There we will take a short break before we return back to Copper Mt. After, whoever wants to, we can
ride our bikes to one of the very close restaurants for a bite to eat. For those that want to go straight back home that would be fine also. We will always go to a restaurant that we can watch and lock our bikes. I know of two already that will work.
Bring your locks!
Good to know:
My little Urtopeia Joy bike had a little bit of trouble on just a few 10 ft to 20 ft areas of real steepness. I will be taking a bigger Aventon bike that goes up those parts a lot easier.
Quick Stop Recommendation:
On your car ride up I would highly recommend a stop at the little Conoco gas station/Sky Chutes Coffee House that is immediately on the left before the entrance to the Copper Mt Resort for a quick restroom break/snacks/pastries and /or a change of clothes, etc. Then get back in your car and enter the Copper Mountain Resort to find the Union Parking Lot.
Union Parking Lot (Free):
To find the parking lot that we are meeting at just enter the resort and just drive all the way down the road till you see the Union Parking lot. There are one or two parking lots right before it, but keep going till about the end of the road. The bike trail will start right there.
Route Breakdown:
- Copper Mountain to Vail Pass Summit: Leaving Copper Mountain Resort, you will pick up the paved bike path heading west. This section climbs roughly 5.3 miles and gains about 900 feet of elevation as it winds between the eastbound and westbound lanes of I-70 to the summit rest area.
- Vail Pass Summit to East Vail: From the top of the pass, you will descend the west side of Vail Pass Bike Path, dropping approximately 9 miles down towards East Vail (ending near the Gore Creek Campground on Bighorn Road). This descent is steep with sharp curves, so use caution.
Bring plenty of water, dress appropriately for the weather, bring snacks if you'd like.
Make sure your battery is fully charged.
Use your gears so that you don't run out of battery.
Tires already pumped up.
