Hacking the Arduino: Women Only Event

Details

TLDR: Come learn about coding by making machines interact with the physical universe. It'll be cool.

The long story: Many emerging technologies are increasingly accessible to all of us, at cheaper prices: think genetic engineering with Crispr Cas9; endless coding languages, learnt for free on the internet; electronics cheaper than food; custom circuit boards manufactured to exquisite precision for mere dollars; crowdfunding; 3D printing of any object you can imagine, in a variety of materials; supercomputers in our pockets; etc.

And, of course, easily programmed embedded devices, especially the world's most famous example, the Arduino.
But what is it? Who should care?

Product designers care. Special effects artists care. Cosplayers care. Environmentalists care. Wearables designers care. Engineers who prototype care. It is a powerful, accessible and low-cost tool that can be used in many ways by many different creative people.

And it is even a great way to start learning about code in the most interactive way possible.

This is a relaxing two hour women-friendly exploration of Arduino, through LEDs.
If you have already used Arduino before, then you might not be too excited by LEDs. Right?
Hold on! These aren't normal LEDs! We will learn to mess with the versatile WS2812B Red/Blue/Green LED chain, and dial out any colour of the rainbow.

After a quick intro where I try not to talk too much, attendees will be guided through the hardware and code, controlling it for themselves. So please bring your laptop, and install the Arduino IDE beforehand to benefit from this hands-on exploration! ^^

Windows:
https://www.arduino.cc/download_handler.php?f=/arduino-1.8.13-windows.exe

Mac:
https://www.arduino.cc/download_handler.php?f=/arduino-1.8.13-macosx.zip

You will learn to:

  • download and setup the Arduino IDE.

  • upload code to the Arduino device via USB.

  • control simple digital electronic input/output, and flash 5mm LEDs.

  • download libraries to extend the functions of the Arduino IDE

  • control the very fancy, very awesome WS2812B red/blue/green LED modules, dialing up any colour of the rainbow!

  • plan a simple beginner project to continue.

  • Please free to ask (m)any question(s)!

  • No prior coding//electronics experience needed!

  • Just bring your laptop and an open mind (but please install Arduino first! It will save time)

  • Women friendly: I absolutely require that all who attend feel comfortable and safe. We meet in a public area, and I strictly enforce a no-hassle policy for shy//vulnerable attendees. If you have any questions in this regards, or if you wish to not reveal personal information like email or phone number, I recommend you contact me via Instagram: paulhoets

  • (Insta messaging can easily block weirdos and obscure personal information).

  • Beyond this, bringing a friend with is always a good thing in this regard ^^

Location:
Miniprint Seoul (near Seoul Forest Station & Ttukseom Station)
https://miniprintseoul.com/about

For safety measures we'd like for the attendees to wear a mask.
