Absolute Certainty - Is It Possible? Should We Seek It?

Details

First time attendees - your first drink is on me!

Descartes established the idea of "Cartesian Certainty" - absolute, indubitable certainty—the kind of knowledge that is so certain that no possible doubt can be raised against it. His desire was to establish a certainty that could not be doubted under any circumstance. This culminated in his famous "I think, therefore I am" statement.

Without getting into the specific characteristics of Cartesian Certainty, the questions for our discussion are:

  • Whether it truly is possible to obtain it (Descartes said it is, so who are we to disagree with him?)?
  • Are there downsides to believing you are absolutely certain on something?
  • Can the concept be applied to God - can we be absolutely certain that there is or is not a God (speaking specifically of the Triune God of the Bible)?
  • Related to the above, does lack of absolute certainty make you any less of a Christian or an unbeliever?
  • If you lack absolute certainty either way - why?

As usual, I'll post where we're sitting in the comments section for this event.
