Topic: WordPress, Bad Guys, and You

WordPress sites are popular targets for computer criminals. Find out why someone might want to break into your WordPress site, how they go about doing it, and what they do after succeeding. By gaining an understanding the criminals' motivations and methods, you'll be better able to keep your WordPress site safe. The talk will include a live demonstration of how to break in to a not-up-to-date / poorly configured WordPress site.

Note: Beginners are welcome, but this will be a very advanced discussion.

Speaker: Mark Montague

Mark Montague is a computer engineer at the University of Michigan who helps researchers use the University's supercomputers to expand the frontiers of human knowledge. From 2006 through 2010, Mark was the manager of the University's central web infrastructure team, which included shared web hosting that some departments used to run WordPress.

We’ll have WordPress Experts and Advanced users available to answer questions and help you solve problems.

Attendees must have a hosted or self hosted (http://en.support.wordpress.com/com-vs-org/) WordPress website already setup and have a good understanding of how to add/edit a blog post or page or install your on plugins. You can view some video tutorials on WP LifeGuard (http://wplifeguard.com/free-wordpress-tutorial-videos/).

If you have never used WordPress before, this is probably not the right workshop for you. You are more than welcome to attend and listen to conversations, we can help point you in the right direction – we only have 2 hrs and lots of people to help :(

We’ll try organize a beginner session later in the year.
