Wordpress: Graphic Design & Typography 7:15 for 7:30pm

Ben Attenborough and Marta have kindly volunterred to talk about Graphic Design and Typography.  Hopefully they will offer their opinions as to what is good, what is rubbish, and what is plain wrong.  Perhaps also they'll offer a few rules of thumb.

We a good mix of people:

• New to Wordpress who'd like to improve their blog,

• Some who maintain & tweak an existing website,

• And a few deeply whizzy developers.

All are welcome.

So usual format:

• Everyone introduces themselves and describes their involvement with Wordpress - about 20 seconds each.

• Ben & Marta

• Group discussion

• Topic for next meeting

• Beer.

Finally got round to uploading my typography slides :)
I've created a index for all my presentations. I'd like to add presentation from other members if everyone is happy with that in order to build up an awesome list of WordPress guides. See the index here:

If you are happy for your presentation to go up (Adam and Will so far) let me know in the comments.

Do you want me to email my slides over to you or are you OK to take them from my link?

I was wondering about the white space discussion, where long texts leave sidebars at the top of the page and hence white space to the side of texts when scrolled down. (Hope that makes sense). Would a solution be to make the sidebar "sticky" so it stays in place as the text is scrolled? Can Wordpress do this? Is it frowned upon as I can't recall seeing it done. Though not really looked to be honest. Peter.

Dear Peter, I like sticky sidebars, because the sidebar might contain a call to action, or suggest related content, or social media sharing. Given that the sidebars would otherwise be blank, my theory is that a visitor is reading your article, gets to the bottom, and is hopefully so impressed that s/he wants to do something like share it with pals, read another of your articles or phone you. Bootstrap, which is a common framework, has .affix which enables this. Otherwise it is a spot of custom html and javascript. My data suggests a slight benefit, and I don't really care about visitors who just read the perceptive content and disappear. I don't think a sticky sidebar puts off people who will eventually write a cheque. However, I suspect the professional graphic designers might disagree.

I think what you say makes good sense Simon, would be interested in the Pro's view.
