Deploying WordPress - pain in the donkey?

What about managing WordPress installations - is it the ultimate pain in the ... donkey? Or have you found a tool or process that makes it easy and foolproof, covers a lot of scenarios and is easy to learn?

I met Otto Kekäläinen, "the CEO who codes" of Seravo, on WordCamp Nordic and he agreed to come and talk about their approach to WordPress upkeep:

If you run WordPress on your own virtual server, you can do whatever you want, but you also need to put a lot of effort in maintaining everything.
