WordPress Leeds Online - Climate friendly WordPress
Details
Our monthly meetup for WordPress users, bloggers and developers. The meetup has been running online since March 2020 and each month we have either a speaker, or run discussions where people can ask questions about WordPress.
Climate friendly WordPress: make your websites greener, faster and more user friendly all at once
The Internet accounts for more emissions than the entire aviation industry. WordPress accounts for more websites than any other platform. WordPress developers therefore have a huge opportunity, and responsibility, to make a difference. Luckily, greening our sites also makes them faster, more resilient, more scalable, and life better for the users (less cpu, battery use, more device compatibility, better offline/poor connectivity behaviour, less data consumed). That should be an easy sell to customers and management.
By default, we can admit that WordPress, as the grandparent of them all, wasn't built for modern standards and user expectations, let alone with the climate emergency in mind. The good news is that by integrating a number of optimisations, design principles and infrastructure choices, we can make WordPress stand proudly with the most climate friendly, inclusive and performant websites built on the latest stacks.
This talk will offer a roadmap for greening your sites, from easy wins (hosting, themes and plugins) to fine tuning and excelling (service workers, caching strategies, energy tracking, green mode design).
