Target Audience: Developers

Have you always wanted to create your own Gutenberg block but didn't know where to start? Or, maybe you tried and found the process daunting or confusing?

If so, then this intermediate learn-up is for you!

PLEASE FOLLOW THESE STEPS BEFORE THE SESSION:
We are using Replit.com for this session to allow attendees to use their web browser to work in a pre-configured WordPress installation.

Please visit this link https://replit.com/teams/join/qcoonxpsfipzcbttgjmgxqqngnnutnxp-learnwp to set up an anonymous account and then click Start Project in beside the Hello Blocks! project.

At the end of this session, you'll be able to...

  • Scaffold new blocks using the @wordpress/create block package and understand the purpose of each file.
  • Understand the build process provided by the @wordpress/scripts package.
  • Understand the block registration process and block.json
  • Use the supports property to add controls to your block
  • Learn how to add custom attributes to a block to save and display a user-defined message in your block.
  • Understand the difference between a static block and a dynamic block, and the pros and cons of each.
