Do you (or someone you know) need to create a simple, four-page website for a small business?

If so, please come join us in this two-hour, first of its kind, super-interactive, build-your-website-along-with-us social learning space!

This social learning space will be presented in an "I Do / You Do / We Do" format. For example, this means that an instructor will show you how to do a task in WordPress, such as add a block theme, then ask you to try it on your own website; when you are successful, great! If at first you don't succeed, we will then pause, troubleshoot your issue either as a large group or in a small breakout room, and then continue on.

Please Note: This means you may be asked to share your screen or your website so we can assist you.

Expect to ask lots of questions, to work with other contributors when you get stuck, to help other contributors when they get stuck, and have a good time along the way!

What you will make:

  • A Homepage That Includes...
  • A Site Logo
  • A Menu with Links
  • Information About Your Website
  • A Map For Your Business
  • Hours of Operation
  • The Description Search Engines Will (Eventually!) Use
  • A Contact Page (With a Contact Form!)
  • An "About Us" Page
  • An "Our Services" Page

Agenda:

  1. Introductions and Icebreakers
  2. Pick and install a block theme - a suggestion will be provided for ease of creation
  3. Pick your colors: stylize your site
  4. Add your logo, site title, links, and tagline
  5. Add information to your homepage
  6. Add a map + hours to your footer
  7. Add the description search engines will use
  8. Create a contact page using a contact form
  9. Create an 'About Us' page
  10. Wrap-Up: Last-minute troubleshooting and questions

What you can/should do to prep ahead of time:

  1. A Hosting Provider - You can also build a test website using a locally hosted sandbox, but please know it can be a little complicated to move it to a live server after the fact. :)
  2. A Domain Name - We will need a live website that other people can see in order for us to help you along the way, and a domain name to access it.

This "Get Setup" course on Learn.WordPress.Org can walk you through steps 1 and 2, if needed.

  1. Written Information. To prep ahead of time, it's a good idea to write out the following in a Google document or other Word Processor of your choice on the following:
  • Information you'd like to appear on your home page
  • A short blurb about your business for search engines (We suggest writing a short blurb for your home page, contact page, about us page, and services page)
  • Information you'd like to include on your 'About Us' page
  • Information you'd like to include on your 'Our Services' page

4. Pictures! You will want to organize and be ready to upload pictures for...

  • Your Site Logo
  • Your 'About Us' Page
  • Your 'Our Services' Page
