Making up more than a quarter of the browsable Internet, it's not difficult to work out why WordPress is so commonly targeted.

1.It's so common, it's almost hard for criminals to avoid.

2.A vast ecosystem of third-party plugins ensures some percentage of this code will be vulnerable or even duplicitous.

3.The means to scan the entire Internet in advance allows attackers to exploit millions of vulnerable systems in hours.

Faced with these facts, this talk will focus on how WordPress servers most commonly get hacked and the root causes of compromises. We will discuss strategies to defend against attacks and detect misuse or abuse of systems running WordPress.

This event is free and open to the public.

Schedule for this event

7:00 PM - gather to the back classroom at Knox Makers for announcements and brief "show and share" if anyone wants to show off WordPress-related projects they've been working on.

~7:00 PM - Lightning talk - TBD. If we do not get a volunteer for a lightning talk, we'll start the main presentation early.

7:15 PM - Main presentation - if we do not have a presentation announced, we may ask for improv presenters or break early straight to Happiness Bar and social time.

~8:00 PM - Happiness Bar! Feel free to step up to the Happiness Bar (we have loaner laptops to use and free wi-fi) and see if a volunteer can help you out with advice or tips.

8:30 PM - Wrap-up and social time - some members move to Market Square for drinks.

Please note about our Happiness Bar: some specialized or extensive work might need to be done on your site including an audit of the code and might be inappropriate to hash out by volunteers. Our Happiness Bar will try to be helpful if we know of any resources or freelancers that may be more appropriate to investigate on your own.
