Alternative proteins are plant-based and food-technology alternatives to animal protein. They include food products made from plants (for example, grains, legumes and nuts), fungus (mushrooms), algae, insects and even cultured (lab-grown) meat.

These innovative foods are designed to taste the same as or better than conventional animal products while costing the same or less.
Compared to conventionally produced proteins, alternative proteins require fewer inputs, such as land and water, and generate far fewer negative externalities, such as greenhouse gas emissions and pollution.

In a world of increasingly conscious eaters, we thought it would be great to dedicate this month's event to Alternative Proteins, including the technologies involved in the process.
