Details

Blue Pencil Sessions are online-only at this time.

NOTE: There are only three guaranteed slots for the reviews and feedback. Slots will be given in submission order and then wait-listed.

Who Is This For?
Writers who want to get feedback on their writing as well as build community with other writers.

Should I attend even if I don't want to submit?
Yes! You can learn as much or more from hearing critique as receiving it. And this is a great opportunity to meet other writers in order to build your community.

What We Do
Blue Pencil Session Panelists provide authors focused and constructive feedback on story problems, scene issues, and the writing life. Our goal is to improve the work through untangling plot threads, showing how to create character, suggestions for realistic dialogue, and tips for world-building. We do not tear down the author. Our Panelists are professional writers and editors in Portland and the PNW.

The Session
Four submitting authors will be reviewed by three to four Panelists. Submitting authors will interact with the panelists, while the non-submitting authors can participate in the group discussion or listen for valuable suggestions on how to improve their own work.

How It Works

  1. Send Andrew (the organizer) your submission:
    - up to 3 pages of manuscript. These pages can be from the beginning or from a blocked scene.
    - 2-3 craft or writing life questions.
  2. The first 4 submissions are guaranteed a 15-minute Blue Pencil review. The rest will be wait-listed. Andrew will post a notification in the discussion when the slots are filled.
  3. At the Session, the Panelists will discuss the submissions in order, providing their feedback and answers to the questions.
  4. The last 20 minutes or so will be open discussion with the Panelists.

I hope to see you there!

-Andrew
