Following Weston & Adams: Photographing Big Sur
Sunday, May 26, 2013 – sunrise - sunset • $100

So maybe you've driven down Highway One before, but have you really photographed Big Sur?
http://photos2.meetupstatic.com/photos/event/b/9/6/6/event_231467462.jpegYou've surely seen the dramatic coast, diving headlong for an aqua green Pacific.

And of course you've driven over one of the tallest (and beautiful) concrete span bridges in the world, right?http://photos1.meetupstatic.com/photos/event/b/9/5/2/event_231467442.jpeg But have you photographed it in the afternoon sun throwing shadows on the beach nearly 400 feet below? Yes?

What about waterfalls amidst towering redwoods or falling directly onto a deserted white sandy beach? Yes?

The meandering Big Sur river winding through undulating golden hills? Yes?

Henry Miller's hangout, Nepenthe where the views on a clear day will send you into a photographic tizzy? Yes? http://photos4.meetupstatic.com/photos/event/b/9/a/2/event_231467522.jpeg

Hidden Pfeiffer Beach where shapely rock stacks stand just mere yards from the shore? Yes?

If you answered no to just one of these you owe it to yourself as a local to make this trip.

We will depart from Carmel before dawn and stay until the sun sinks into the Pacific. Be prepared for a very long, but exhilirating day!

What you may learn:
• how to capture a sense of place
• how to incorporate lines, shapes and textures
• how to isolate subject matter with macro photography
• techniques to create emotionally compelling imagery
• how to approach people and create more interesting portraits
• how to weave a story with your images

Who should come?
This event is open to all experience levels. If you are not familiar with all the buttons, dials and menus of your particular camera don't worry too much. We will be focused on seeing and how to create images that convey a sense of place, emotion and wonder.

What to bring?
Your camera and a variety of lenses. Plenty of memory cards, extra camera batteries. Optional: flash, tripod. Bring (or buy) lunch, water and wear layered clothing for all weather conditions. It can be sunny and warm around town or on the trail, but cool and windy at the open ocean. Just be prepared. Though no rigourous hiking is necessary, you should be able to walk up to 3 miles comfortably.

Location Information: Big Sur is a 90 mile stretch of land south of Carmel. It is more a state of mind, than a specific location. (Yes, there is an actual town named Big Sur but it is very spread out.) Highway One is a narrow and winding road and one is constantly distracted by the breathtaking views, so driving here is slow going. From Carmel (about a 2-2.5 hour drive from SF), budget 45 minutes to get to the Big Sur Bakery.
