18:20: Making shortcodes a piece of cake, Matthew Haines-Young

We want to create interesting and engaging content, but whilst WordPress has a great interface for writing text, when it comes to incorporating more complex page elements, it’s not so great. We want to solve this problem.

I’m going to talk about Shortcake. Its a plugin that aims to create a great interface for managing blocks of non-text content using the Shortcode API to achieve this, without ever having to see any code. Its currently a feature plugin and we’d love to see something like this in WordPress core one day.

About Matthew (

I’m a senior WordPress developer at Human Made ( where I work mostly with large scale and enterprise sites.

18:50: Guilt-free Coding, Jason Agnew

Guilt-free Coding is a philosophy, it's about learning to let go of the guilt that you might have for not doing something the right way, or even newest way, and accepting sometimes it's good to give yourself a break and just get it done.

In this talk, I'll walk you through my techniques of letting go of guilt, and finding real enjoyment in learning. Applying these techniques made learning React.js a joy for me; I'll be covering some of the successes and failures I had during this process. Don't worry, though, I won't be suggesting you "throw out the rulebook", as there can be consequences in doing that.

About Jason (

I'm the Technical Director at Big Bite Creative (, a WordPress VIP Partner Agency. I like to think of myself as an all-round programmer who's spent the last six years specialising in web development, and I'm the author of a few open source projects: Herbert (, Suzie ( and Peggy (

19:30: Social! Why not join us for a drink after the event too! We'll probably be heading to the Warerooms around the corner.

And thanks, as ever, to our sponsors, Campus North ( for the venue (check out their sponsors here (
