Creative web typography and fun with flags

For our April meetup, Michelle Barker brings us a talk focusing on creative web typography and then Ian Jenkins will be speaking about feature flags.

  1. Creative Web Typography
  • Michelle Barker

Skill level: Beginner, intermediate

This talk will explore the creative possibilities afforded by a number of new and powerful CSS specifications for typographic design and layout on the web. From variable fonts to custom properties to writing modes and more, we’ll examine some new ways to design web typography with code.

About Michelle

Michelle is a Lead Front End Developer at Bristol web agency Atomic Smash, and a Mozilla Tech Speaker. She is the author of front end blog CSS { In Real Life } and has written technical articles for CSS Tricks, Web Designer magazine, Smashing Magazine and many more. She can usually be found tinkering with creative CSS demos on Codepen.

  1. Fun with flags
  • Ian Jenkins

Skill level: Intermediate, Advanced

Ever wanted to release a feature without actually releasing it? Maybe to test it out in production, or to not hold back a deployment? This talk will go through what Feature Flags are, why you'll want to work with them on your next WordPress project, and how to do so effectively.

We’ll also touch on Continuous Delivery and how using Feature Flags can set you on the path of delivering with confidence.

About Ian
Ian is a Principal Developer at Box UK, an agile software agency based in Cardiff doing stuff mostly with PHP and WordPress.

🍴 We provide a free healthy buffet with a wide range of dietary requirements (veggie, vegan, gluten-free and lactose free) thanks to our generous sponsors, and Atomic Smash.

🍻 There is a well-stocked and licensed bar at the venue, so please feel free to buy a drink to enjoy at our event. If you would like water, think of the environment 🌍 and bring a bottle 🙂

Located in the heart of Bristol, just on the edge of Bristol Bridge, our venue Runway East is easy to get to.

🚂 From Bristol Temple Meads it is a 10 minute (flat!) walk

🚘 For cars, there are pay and display spaces outside the venue on Redcliff Street at a cost of around £3 for the evening. Alternatively there is an NCP on Queen Charlotte Street (five minute walk) costing a fixed £4.50 for the evening (5pm - 2am).

🚲 For bikes, there are plenty of bike stands just across the road on the other side of Victoria Street.

⌚Please arrive from 6.30pm. You will be greeted by our friendly and knowledgeable volunteers who will give you your name badge and get settled in. Talks start around 7pm.

After the first talk we take a break and then have our second talk. The talks usually finish around 9.15pm (ish) and we aim to leave by 9.45pm (ish).

*If you find you can no longer make this meeting please do change your RSVP. As we provide food for these events it is helpful to know what number to cater for and to ensure that the waitlist is kept short. Thanks.
