Hi there ✨
Whoever you are, you're warmly invited to join me for a full-day writing workshop ✍️ with:
- brunch 🍳,
- tea/coffee ☕,
- a free Penguin mini modern classic book
- a late afternoon drink (beer, wine, or soft - you decide)
- and plenty of space to remember, invent, and get some ideas down on the page 🌱
Together, we'll be writing childhood. Not memoir exactly, not nostalgia exactly — something closer to the strange, half-lit territory where memory and imagination blur, and the child's-eye view sees more than the adult one gives it credit for.
We'll read short extracts from poets, novelists, and short story writers who've worked in this territory — including Katherine Mansfield, Ian McEwan, Jamaica Kincaid, Sharon Olds, William Blake, and Vasko Popa — then use them as springboards for our own guided writing exercises, in poetry or prose fiction, whichever calls to you.
What do we mean by childhood? 🤔
We're interested in writing that asks questions like:
- What does the child understand that the adult around them doesn't?
- Where does memory end and invention begin?
- What's lost when we grow up — and what, if anything, is gained?
- And what can we unlock in our own writing when we let ourselves see the world at that height again?
No strict rules. No right answers. Just curiosity, play, and honest language. 🧸
What's the plan? 🗓️
- Arrive at Finch's Pub for tea/coffee ☕ and a gentle warm-up writing session ✍️
- Settle into reading, conversation, supported exploration, and lots more writing 💬
- Break for brunch 🍳 at the pub
- Dive back in for an afternoon of deeper writing and creative experiments 🌀
- Wind down with our end-of-day pub quiz! 🧠
