The world of technical communication is evolving rapidly, and so are the job titles that define our roles. From "Technical Writer" to "Content Designer," "Developer Advocate" to "Documentation Engineer," the landscape of what we call ourselves and what others call us continues to shift and expand.
Job titles aren't just labels; they shape how we're perceived, what opportunities we're offered, and how we fit into organizational structures. They can open doors or create barriers, accurately reflect our work or completely miss the mark. As our field grows and intersects with UX, product, engineering, and marketing, the question of naming becomes increasingly complex.
Join us as we explore the evolving taxonomy of technical communication roles and what it means for our careers and community.
Discussion topics:
- What's your current job title? How well does it reflect what you actually do?
- Have you seen interesting or unusual job titles in our field recently?
- How do job titles affect hiring, compensation, and career progression?
- How do job titles map to pay grades and salary bands at your organization?
- Do you prefer traditional titles like "Technical Writer" or newer ones like "Content Designer"? Why?
- How do job titles vary across industries, company sizes, or geographic regions?
- What challenges arise when your actual responsibilities don't match your official title?
- How do you explain your role to people outside the field?
- What trends are you seeing in how companies structure and name documentation roles?
