Naming Conventions and Taxonomies

Details

Clear communication requires consistent terminology. In this session, we’ll explore how naming conventions and taxonomies can help organizations keep terminology aligned across documentation, tech support, marketing, and design. We'll talk about where inconsistencies show up and how naming conventions and taxonomies are established and maintained. Join us to share your challenges, questions, and advice.

Questions for our discussion:

  • Have you encountered inconsistencies in terminology, either as a tech writer or as a software user? Where? In the software user interface, marketing, search, documentation?
  • What are some of the problems that inconsistent terminology creates?
  • What tools or systems do you use to maintain consistent terminology in documentation?
  • Is terminology managed across teams at your organization? If yes, who manages it? How are terms added and revised?
  • What challenges can people face when they try to align terminology across an organization? What are some good ways to approach these challenges?
  • Are there situations where different terminology is acceptable for different teams or users? How do you manage that?
  • What sources can you recommend for people who are interested in building and improving naming conventions or taxonomies?

Our Code of Conduct applies to all our community spaces.
