Technical writers have plenty of experiences, ideas, and lessons learned to share with others. But how do we decide to turn these things into conference presentations? And how do we develop proposals that get people interested?

Whether you might someday think about submitting your first proposal or you’ve presented at conferences before, let's talk about finding topics, developing ideas, and putting together strong proposals.

  • Have you ever submitted a conference proposal or presented at a conference? What was the topic?
  • What came to you first: the topic or the decision to propose a talk? Did you begin with a source of inspiration and then decide you wanted to present it, or did you decide you wanted to do a presentation and then look for a noteworthy subject?
  • How do you turn something that was meaningful to you into something that would be relevant to a broad audience?
  • What kinds of sessions are you drawn to at conferences? Are they about specific problems, general lessons, or new practices? What else?
  • Conference proposals are usually the source for conference session descriptions. What kinds of information do you think a proposal and description should include? When you’re at a conference and deciding which sessions to attend, what catches your attention in a description?
  • How do you come up with a good presentation title?
  • Have you ever presented with someone else? Would you present with someone else again? Why or why not?
  • What advice would you give someone submitting their first conference proposal?
  • What holds you back from submitting proposals? What might be a first step, and what would make you take it?
