Tech writers spend a lot of time communicating, usually in small conversations or on the page. But sometimes we end up addressing a bigger crowd. Whether it's giving a presentation at work or speaking at a conference, public speaking is a valuable skill in our field.

  • What's your feeling about public speaking: excited about it? a bit nervous? horrified by the idea?
  • Do you have any public speaking events coming up, or are you considering any? What are they?
  • What kinds of public speaking have you already done? How did it go?
  • Have you experienced fear of public speaking and overcome it? How did you do it?
  • Do you sometimes speak up in groups or meetings? If yes, why? How might you translate that motivation to speaking more formally? If no, why not?
  • Are there public speakers who have especially impressed you? What did they do well?
  • What good advice have you received about presenting?
  • What are your strategies for putting together a good presentation?
  • How do you prepare in the moments before you begin?
  • Got any other public-speaking tips you can share?
