In the twenty-first century, semiconductors touch every facet of our daily lives, from starting cars and operating cash registers to generating electricity and landing airplanes. Current demand for these tiny devices—popularly known as “chips”—is almost insatiable.
The advent of Artificial Intelligence has further accelerated the need for semiconductors, making today’s semiconductor industry one of the most dominant enterprises in the world. Currently over 2200 semiconductor companies worldwide generate a cumulative annual revenue of $793 billion. Seventy-five of those companies, employing over 100,000 local residents, are located in the Phoenix area. So, the semiconductor industry offers ample opportunities for technical writers here in the Valley.
In this seminar, Lou Kummerer provides an overview of the semiconductor industry and the manufacturing operations involved in making chips. The core of the seminar focuses on the role technical writers play in the industry, the types of documents required by semiconductor customers and the process for creating those documents. Finally, the seminar reviews the skills and knowledge essential to becoming a successful semiconductor technical writer.

Lou Kummerer has over forty years of experience in the semiconductor industry, both as a technical writer and as a technical publications manager. He has documented semiconductor products ranging from microprocessors and embedded controllers to advanced SOC (System on a Chip) AI devices. He has a BSCS degree from Arizona State University.
