Back to Childhood: Mixed-Media Collage Making

Let’s celebrate the arrival of spring by making a mixed-media collage!

Kia ora e hoa mā! Hello folks!

This is the first event of the ‘Back-to-Childhood’ series from Written & Drawn. This time, we’re making a mixed-media collage to celebrate the long-awaited arrival of spring and the awakening of Mother Nature. (I’ve missed you so much, dear spring!)

What is this?
This is a workshop (kind of!) where I’ll help you bring your own artwork to life.

Who is this for?
It’s open to anyone who wants to tap into their creativity and make a piece of art.

Venue: Auckland Central City Library, 2nd floor, near the windows at a round table.

Time: Saturday, 2:00 pm – 4:30 pm

Schedule:
2:00 – 2:10 – Late arrivals & Introductions
2:10 – 4:15 – Focused work with a lil’ bit of chat (feel free to take breaks as needed)
4:15 – 4:30 – Sharing & cherishing our artworks!

How to find us: I’ll be carrying a handmade A4 table-top banner reading ‘Mixed-Media Collage’ for visibility.

Theme:
The theme is ‘spring’, but it’s totally fine if you prefer to create something else.

What to bring:

• Scrap materials: scrap papers, scrap fabrics, magazines, newspapers, etc.
• Art supplies: I’ll bring colour pencils and pastels, but please feel free to bring your own as well – plus markers and any other art supplies you have. Please avoid gouache, acrylics, or watercolours, as they aren’t practical in the library setting, and the A4 paper I’ll provide isn't water-resistant.
• Scissors: I have a couple of pairs, but extras are always helpful to reduce wait times.
• Glue: I have glue to share in case we run out.
• Folder: Bring a folder to safely take your artwork home.

New to collaging? Here are some easy steps for your first piece:

1. Make a rough draft of what you want to see.
2. Create the background – either paint, cut and paste pieces from scrap paper/magazines, or do both.
3. Create the foreground objects – again, either paint, cut and paste, or both.
4. Add details where needed.
5. Voilà! Cherish your amazing artwork and the arrival of spring!

Guidelines: Please be mindful when interacting with others and refrain from making racist, discriminatory, or sexist comments. Do not give feedback unless requested. If anything makes you uncomfortable, let me know in private, and we’ll work through it together.
