Information on Nordic Walking

Modern lifestyle, with its lack of everyday physical activity and exercise training, predisposes people to chronic diseases ranging from as diabetes mellitus, obesity, hypertension, and coronary artery diseases. Brisk walking, as a simple and safe form of exercise, is by all means an effective measure to counteract sedentary lifestyle risks even in the most unfit conditions and could lead to a reduction of the prevalence of chronic diseases in all populations.

According to Nordic walking experts, the health benefits of Nordic walking, (walking with poles), compared to brisk walking and jogging, are its beneficial effects on resting heart rate, blood pressure, exercise capacity, maximal oxygen consumption. It is recommended to a wide range of people as primary and secondary prevention

Consequently, the technique of Nordic Walking is based on 3 main pillars:

·  Correct walking technique

·  Correct posture

·  Correct use of poles

Technically correct use of poles actively engages the upper body into the process of walking, to propel the body forward. The physical strain is distributed, in a well-balanced and the appropriate way to various muscle groups of the whole body.

The correct pole technique gives an opportunity to significantly intensify the process of walking by increasing the muscle work of the upper body. It also gives an opportunity to involve the muscles of the rest of the body.

Nordic Walking is a safe, natural, dynamic, efficient and suitable-for-all form of a physical activity that trains the body in a holistic, symmetrical and balanced way.

The overall goal of Nordic Walking is to promote a general physical and mental well being.
