11am start time: Out-of-town hike at Strathcona Wilderness Centre
Details
Strathcona Wilderness Centre is situated on 550 acres of parkland next to the beautiful shores of Bennett Lake. SWC offers lots of trails through woodland, meadows, and lakeshore terrain. See their website for further info, directions to get there, and their trail map.
We will be hiking at a *MODERATE* pace for about 2.5 hours (~9-10km) with a 20-minute lunch break at the 5km mark. The outer loop is ~7.5km to the parking lot then for those who want to continue, we can go on some inner trails for an extra 2km or so.
OPTIONAL: After the hike, we can play some disc golf which is free. Just bring your disc(s) or regular frisbee(s) will work as well.
- Discs are available for rental at the Info Centre; $4/disc, deposit required (distance drivers, midrange, and putters available).

- Please note that this out-of-town hike will be weather dependent.
- On-leash dogs will be permitted on SWC trails from April to October.
- Items to bring: water, lunch &/or snacks, appropriate walking footwear and clothing, bug spray, and sunscreen.
- Optional items to bring: camera, bear horn / spray.

- This walk will be at a medium pace at minimum with only a few stops along the way.
- * Remember that if you can’t attend, please update your RSVP so we can do a headcount at the event.
- *We are requesting a voluntary donation of $2 per event, or our suggested annual donation of $20. You can give the money to us and we’ll pass it along to our administrator who pays our group fee on Meetup. Thanks in advance.
FAQs
Where are we meeting?
- The info is in the event location. When we arrive at the parking lot, the “real time” location will be shared via Google Maps in the comments in case you’re running late.
What should I wear?
- Please wear / bring layers so you can take something off or put on, if need be. *In winter, please bring ice grips!
Can I bring my dog?
- **Dogs are very welcome on our in-town events but please note that there are "on leash" and "off leash" sections of these trails, so please be aware of these and adhere to the City's regulations.**
Do I need to sign my dog up as a guest?
- No need - guests mean humans
