Talk 1: Kubernetes (EKS) cost optimisation with Karpenter
Speakers: Rashid Matin and Luke Armitage, at William Hill
In this talk, William Hill will show how they addressed the challenge of EKS cost optimisation and right sizing using Karpenter. They will talk through their journey into EKS and the challenges faced with resource utilisation, different considerations to approach and ultimately why Karpenter provided the right solution, leading to 100% spot usage in dev with 80% in our pre prod environment and 50% in prod.

Talk 2: How Amazon Innovates and Working Backwards
Speaker: Danny Horsfall, at AWS
Amazon has a peculiar approach to innovation that is intrinsically linked to how we use technology and organize our teams. In this session, customers are introduced to how we innovate at Amazon, organized around four interdependent elements: culture, mechanisms, architecture, and organization. Customers can dive deeper on each topic, including Leadership Principles, the process of Working Backwards, the structure of AWS’s microservices architecture, and Amazon’s organization around two-pizza teams.

Food and drink
Food will be in the form of pizza - please let us know if you have any specific dietary requirements prior to the day and we will endeavour to meet your needs. We’ll also be providing a range of drinks.
A huge thanks to our sponsors, xDesign and Cloudsoft, and to Aviva for hosting.
Code of conduct
Like a large number of other communities, we have an anti harassment policy and code of conduct (https://www.meetup.com/York-Amazon-Web-Services-User-Group/pages/32649582/Code_of_Conduct/), in order to support the inclusive nature of our events. It is necessary for all attendees, speakers, sponsors and volunteers at any AWS Leeds to agree with the code of conduct.
Helping with diversity and inclusivity
The organising team for AWS York are keen to promote diversity and inclusivity, in terms of speakers, how events are run, and the composition of the organising team. If you would like to contribute to this aim, particularly if you think you have experiences that you might not consider to be typical for the majority of the tech community, we would be really excited to talk with you at the event.
