Heath to Stanley & back

Details

A circular, mostly flat walk of 6.25 miles, with one stepped bridge and a few short inclines, from Heath to Stanley Ferry and back led by John today.
The first 25 mins will be at a slower pace as he will talk about the history of the village and surrounding areas as we walk, but the walk will then get underway in earnest, with just a couple of short stops at places of interest.

Meet at 10.45 for 11.00 start in the public car park just below the Kings Arms pub on Heath Common in Wakefield.

🚗 Use WF1 5SE for satnav purposes 👍🏻

If you turn immediate right (90 degrees) when you see the HEATH road sign on the approach to the village, you will arrive at the car park. Beware as there are two right turn options at this point. If you pass it don’t worry as it’s easily visible from the front of the pub.

From here we will walk out of the village and wend our way through the woods. We'll follow the paths and emerge at the Stanley Ferry marina. The pub should be open and after a food/toilet stop we’ll walk along the canal past the houseboats and swans and back into the woods before returning to the village taking in another historic monument.

There’s an 18th century hostelry at the end of the walk with indoor and outdoor seating for anyone who wants to sample its ales or enjoy a warm coffee or tea.

Bearing in mind the English weather please bring stout walking shoes/boots, walking poles, a warm top and a waterproof coat and sun screen! Also bring snacks and drinks.

If sniffing or coughing and/or of a grumpy disposition please stay at home 🤒🤨😷

Dogs welcome with obedient owners 🐾🐾

Meetup Fees £1 please
