Easedale Tarn - 5 miles
Details
THIS WALK HAS BEEN ORGANISED FOR THOSE ATTENDING THE WEEKEND AWAY IN GRASMERE AND IS FOR INFORMATION ONLY. THEREFORE THERE IS NO NEED TO RSVP AND NO WALK FEES ARE PAYABLE.
‘A truly exhilarating mountain walk that ascends by the side of spectacular waterfalls, to reach the very dramatic viewpoint of Easedale Tarn’.
Our Sunday morning walk starts from Glenthorne car park at 10am (having checked-out of the guest house).
After stretching our legs along the roadside, we cross a footbridge and follow a good solid path as our ‘challenge’ rises in front of us - a steep but spectacular ascent up to Easedale Tarn.
It’s a 45 minute climb up well-defined if rocky paths alongside Sour Milk Gill as it embarks on a steep descent beside us. We are well-rewarded for our exertions as the tarn comes into view with mountainous vistas to accompany it.
On the morning of the recce (20/9/22), there was a peace & tranquility around the tarn with mist-shrouded hilltops, a time of contemplation whilst sat having my elevenses on the water’s edge.
Sheep bleating, ducks quacking and the gentle rhythm of the cascading stream were the only sounds to interrupt the senses. Magical !
After our morning break, we do a circuit around the tarn, crossing stepping stones and rocky gills at various points, most of the time the paths are fairly clear but there are likely to be a few boggy areas in the clearings between the bracken but well worth circumnavigating the tarn for alternative views and reflections on the water.
On completing the circuit, we begin our descent, back down the way we came up and returning to Glenthorne.
The walk will be led at a steady pace: not too fast, not too slow. Please be ready to set off at the advertised time, having already checked out of the guest house and packed your cars.
Bring snacks/drink with you for a morning break. Sturdy, good grip footwear is recommended for this walk.
After-walk refreshment: its highly unlikely we will find a venue that could accomodate the whole group on a lunch-time in Grasmere. Therefore, for those wishing to hang around, we’ll probably have to split into smaller groups in search of lunch-time refreshment.
You can leave your cars at Glenthorne until you set off for home – bearing in mind also that the car parks in Grasmere are not cheap!
ALTERNATIVE WALK: If the weather is inclement, there is the option of doing a similar length, lower level walk around Rydal Water & Grasmere Lake.
I have no formal walk leader or first-aid qualifications and the Group does not have insurance. When you RSVP for any walk, you accept that you remain responsible for your own safety at all times. You are required to respect the walk leader and be mindful of the safety of others. Please keep to the pace of the group and don’t go off ahead even if you think you know the route.
