Kettlewell-Great Whernside-Starbotton: 10 miles

Details
A walk not led since 2020! This is a spectacular & strenuous walk highlighting the Yorkshire Dales at their best. The long, steep ascent to the trig point on Great Whernside took me 1hr 15mins to climb although this is split into two sections with our first short break of the day in the grounds of the haunted hostel at Hag Dyke! We then complete our ascent to the trig point at 2,310’ where we shall have another short break.
The stunning vista continues as we edge closer to our steep descent to ultimately make our way around to Cam Head, a spectacular stop for our lunch break. Further on we take another memorable route across the moor before dropping down into Starbotton from where we pick up the river Wharfe for an attractive route back to Kettlewell and welcome refreshment.
After-walk refreshment: a variety of pub & tearooms on offer. The two pubs are opposite one another and there is a tearoom opposite the car park.
The walk will be led at a steady pace: not too fast, not too slow. Please be ready to start walking at the advertised time. No mobile reception.
Walk fee: £3. No dogs please. Bring packed lunch/snacks and plenty of liquid refreshment, even more important if it’s a warm day.
NOTE: Whilst I appreciate people will have long drives to the location, due to the popularity of this area, the start time is 10 for 10.15. Please don’t expect the Group to wait for you if you turn up at the last minute and then have problems finding a parking space. You should aim to be ready to walk at 10am.
Start location: meet in the main car park behind the garage in Kettlewell (£6 with toilets). Alternative and cheaper parking is available (if you’re early enough) in the smaller car park opposite the garage (£3). Car sharing is a good idea to mitigate any potential issues with parking at a popular summer location and also to spread the cost of the parking.
Postcode of the tearoom opposite the main car park is BD23 5QZ.
I have no formal walk leader or first-aid qualifications and the Group does not have insurance. When you RSVP for any walk, you accept that you remain responsible for your own safety at all times. You are required to respect the walk leader and be mindful of the safety of others. Please keep to the pace of the group and don’t go off ahead even if you think you know the route.
