Hole of Horcum from Levisham Station - 8.5 miles

Details
A very rewarding walk with fab views, heather moorlands, a ruined tower overlooking a panoramic landscape, steam trains, a wonderful valley section, riverside and woodland trails - and a great pub in a picturesque village to finish!!
Although the Hole of Horcum is dramatic in itself, by starting the walk from Levisham station, it becomes even more rewarding as well as a more challenging distance/walk rather than just walking around the HOH.
This is a fairly challenging walk so you should be a regular walker with a reasonable level of fitness and be comfortable with both ascent and descent as well as undulating paths. However, there are no particularly steep ascents or descents (apart from short sections) on this walk.
The adventure begins before the walk even starts. Once leaving the A169 to pick up the road to our meeting point, the road passes through the villages of Lockton and Levisham along a twisting, winding road with hairpins. Levisham station is a further 1.5 miles from the village itself along further winding, narrow roads. In all, it’s a three mile drive from the A169 to Levisham station. Postcode is YO18 7NN.
Once there, you can park in the station car park for a donation or drive across the level crossing and there are some spaces along the roadside. There are toilets at the station but since the whole operation is run on a voluntary basis, don’t assume the toilets will be open.
CAR SHARING IS HIGHLY RECOMMENDED FOR THIS ONE.
Our route is extensively across moorland & woodland trails with some field walking, Levisham village and the Hole of Horcum itself.
The author of this walk considers it contains two of the top 5 views on the North York Moors!
The walk will be led at a steady pace: not too fast, not too slow. Please be ready to start walking at the advertised time.
Walk fee £3. No dogs please. Bring packed lunch/drink/snacks.
After-walk refreshment at The Horseshoe Inn in Levisham village, which is also a delight if you like old country pubs.
I have no formal walk leader or first-aid qualifications and the Group does not have insurance. When you RSVP for any walk, you accept that you remain responsible for your own safety at all times. You are required to respect the walk leader and be mindful of the safety of others. Please keep to the pace of the group and don’t go off ahead even if you think you know the route.
