A Roman Settlement & the Oldest Pub in England – 3.5 miles

Details

PROMPT START DUE TO LIMITED DAYLIGHT.

This walk commences from the car park of the Bingley Arms in the village of Bardsey, off the A58 Leeds – Wetherby road. It has the strongest claim (or at least one of them) to be the oldest pub in the country, due to the unbroken length of time it has held a pub licence. Postcode is LS17 9DR.

PLEASE ENSURE YOU ONLY USE THE PARKING AREA ON THE LEFT-HAND SIDE AS YOU DRIVE INTO THE CAR PARK OR ALTERNATIVELY, PARK ON THE ROADSIDE.

Having walked through the village, we head for the woods and onto Hetchell Crags. Our route then takes us past the ancient earthworks, ruinous mill buildings and under the old railway bridge, emerging near Moat Hall. Field edge walking and a copse lie on our route to bring us back to the A58 road. We take the ‘scenic route’ back to our start point which very conveniently drops us down into the pub car park.

The walk will be led at a steady pace: not too fast, not too slow. W

Walk fee: £2. No dogs please.

I have no formal walk leader or first-aid qualifications and the Group does not have insurance. When you RSVP for any walk, you accept that you remain responsible for your own safety at all times. You are required to respect the walk leader and be mindful of the safety of others. Please keep to the pace of the group and don’t go off ahead even if you think you know the route.
