DEPOSIT PAYMENT DEADLINE: July 29th
FINAL BALANCE PAYMENT DEADLINE: August 12th
Join me on a jolly old jaunt involving a steam train ride, a coastal walk of 6.5 miles and a meal at a fish & chip restaurant.
Event Eligibility
This event is open to anyone who has paid their £10 annual membership fee and, in the case of new members, have attended at least one walk with the Group this year. Therefore, no guests are permitted on this event.
Itinerary
Start location: we are required to arrive at least 20mins before train departure at the NYMR station in Pickering. The train departs at 9.20am, arriving in Whitby at 11.10am. Parking charge is £5. The station is located at 12 Park Street, Pickering, YO18 7AJ.
On arriving at Whitby, we will complete a coastal walk to Sandsend, spending a maximum of 30mins in a café before returning to Whitby via the same route although if the tide is out, our return will include a good stretch along the beach.
We then head off to the Quayside restaurant for our pre-booked fish & chips or, if you refer to their online menu, there are other options!
Finally, we catch the 5.10pm train back to Pickering, arriving at 6.45pm.
Train info
Our 24 mile route begins at Pickering, travelling through NYMR stations at Levisham, Newtondale Halt, Goathland & Grosmont, after which we join the Esk Valley Line to complete the journey to Whitby.
The normal train fare is £49.50 but if we book a Group of at least 20 people, we will get reserved seating and a discounted fare of £40.
Group bookings have to be made well in advance (and not just to increase our chances of availability) with a 50% non-refundable deposit.
Therefore, the expectation is that if you RSVP for this event, you will be in a position to send the full funds (£49.50) to me within three days of your place being allocated. Account details will be sent to all attendees once I have numbers.
PLEASE NOTE: I have tried to strike a balance between people having time to RSVP/pay their deposits and not leaving it too late to secure our booking. Fingers crossed!
The walk
A popular coastal walk from Whitby to the nearby village of Sandsend. It's about a 3 mile walk on a fairly flat path with splendid cliff top views and lovely beaches.
However, we initially complete a loop within Whitby, winding our way along the quayside, across the swing bridge and up the 199 steps to Whitby Abbey encompassing views of the harbour town, the coastline and the Abbey itself.
Having caught our breath, we make our way back down into the Old Town via Caedmon’s Trod, back over the swing bridge and then continue our walk along the quayside towards the pier, passing the famous Magpie café en route.
At the far end of the quayside, we turn with the coastline heading up more steps to the Cook Monument, looking down on the lovely beaches & colourful beach huts as the Cleveland Way takes us along West Cliff towards our ultimate destination of Sandsend, en route passing the Pavilion and some attractive seaside properties.
After a refreshment stop at one of Sandsend’s café’s, we head back towards Whitby, this time walking predominantly on the beach, subject to the tides.
OTHER NOTES
Event fee is £3 payable in cash on arrival.
As per usual, no dogs are permitted on this event.
Advisable to bring snacks/drink with you, sun hat/cream/sunglasses plus waterproof jacket!
Please advise of any dietary requirements that I will need to forward to the restaurant.
I have no formal walk leader or first-aid qualifications and the Group does not have insurance. When you RSVP for any walk or other event, you accept that you remain responsible for your own safety at all times. You are required to respect the walk leader and be mindful of the safety of others. Please keep to the pace of the group and don’t go off ahead even if you think you know the route.
