THIS WALK IS BEING LED FOR THOSE ON THE GRASMERE WEEKEND AND IS FOR INFORMATION ONLY. THERE IS NO NEED TO RSVP AND NO WALK FEE IS PAYABLE.

A walk that encompasses two local lakes: Grasmere & Rydal Water.

We start from the guest house (after checking out & leaving the cars in the car park) and take a scenic path into the village centre. We walk along the meandering main street past the cemetery where Wordsworth is buried adjacent to the famous gingerbread shop. On the outskirts of the village, we pass Wordsworth’s Dove Cottage before we commence a 20min climb up a quiet road – the bulk of the ascent on this walk.

Having acquired our elevated position, we progress along the Coffin Route with views of Rydal Water down below. Presently we arrive at the hamlet of Rydal where ‘The Mount’ was another Wordsworth residence.

From here we drop down the road to pick up the lakeside trail, our path eventually veers away from Rydal Water, briefly ascends and then descends to the shoreline of Grasmere lake. We walk around the lake before picking up a lane to take us back into Grasmere village passing by the quaintly named Faeryland.

Terrain: quiet roads, pavement walking, stony paths, woodland trails.

Apart from the early 20min climb, there are a few ‘undulations’ but nothing major.

The walk will be led at a steady pace: not too fast, not too slow. Please be ready to start walking at the advertised time.

Walk fee £0. No dogs please. Bring snacks/drink for a morning break. Good, sturdy footwear is recommended.

Start point: Meet in the Guest House lounge at 9.15am having checked out and packed your cars!

After-walk refreshment: a booking has been made for the Group for Sunday lunch at the Swan Hotel on the outskirts of Grasmere. Turn right out of the car park at Glenthorne, heading down to the road junction where you turn left. At the end of this road, the Swan Hotel will be facing you. As well as the hotel car parks, there are a couple of nearby sideroads that you could perhaps get a small number of cars parked on. However, it is recommended that we car share due to parking spaces being taken up by hotel residents and Sunday lunch is likely to be popular.

I have no formal walk leader or first-aid qualifications and the Group has no insurance. When you RSVP for any walk, you accept that you remain responsible for your own safety at all times. You are required to respect the walk leader and be mindful of the safety of others. Please keep to the pace of the group and don’t go off ahead even if you think you know the route.
