Harome – Nunnington: 6.5 miles

Details
Second run-out for this walk. A flat walk in the countryside between the villages of Harome & Nunnington. Harome is located three miles from Helmsley and is best known for the 14thc thatched-roofed Star Inn. It’s a picturesque place with a duck pond behind the other hostelry, the Pheasant Hotel. Nunnington has its Hall as well as the Old Yard Coffee Shop, which is also home to a studio and antique store.
Our start point is outside the Pheasant Hotel opposite the church on a corner of the main street and a side road. From here we walk past some attractive properties, heading in the direction of the red-bricked Methodist Church before crossing fields & footbridges over the river Riccal en route to Nunnington.
Our morning break will be at the café (if its open) before we do a loop around the village and then the river Rye guides us back to Harome through fields and riverside trails and underneath the old railway.
The last section is along Hall Lane which becomes a surfaced road that takes us past more thatched properties and the duck pond and back to our start point.
The walk will be led at a steady pace: not too fast, not too slow. Please be ready to start walking at the advertised time.
Walk fee: £3. No dogs please. Bring packed lunch/snacks/drink – we can have our packed lunches by the pond on our return before patronising one of the hostelries. Best to bring other provisions in case the café is closed (which it often is!). A packed lunch is recommended as the food in the two hostelries is expensive!
Start point: Pheasant Hotel, Harome. YO62 5JE.
After-walk refreshment: We have a choice of the Pheasant Hotel or The Star Inn, both have outside areas although the weather and the size of the group will determine which venue is more suitable. You will definitely need a change of footwear to go into either of these establishments. The Pheasant was awarded Small Hotel of the Year in 2024.
I have no formal walk leader or first-aid qualifications and the Group does not have insurance. When you RSVP for any walk, you accept that you remain responsible for your own safety at all times. You are required to respect the walk leader and be mindful of the safety of others. Please keep to the pace of the group and don’t go off ahead even if you think you know the route.
